The Tell-Tale Heart:
Three Tales by Edgar Allan Poe, 1809 - 1849
Legendary Master of the Macabre
Performed by David Cade (CD Audiobook, with music)
Summaries of the stories:
1.  The Tell-Tale Heart.
It is so easy to fall victim to obsession and the power of its grip is rapidly doubled by pride.  Soon there is no turning back, evil has its day, and then, despite every effort to silence it, the guilt comes thrusting out . . . at a time quite unexpected, and in the most horrifying manner imaginable!

2.  Berenice.
Egaeus and Berenice, both of a long line of visionaries, grow up together in privileged and exalted surroundings.  But Berenice's childhood is one of joy and beauty, while her cousin turns his gaze to the gloom of the cloister.  In early adulthood, however, their paths intersect . . . and with the most horrifying consequences.
3.  The Raven.
One dark December evening, the great dark bird appears.  It enters the chamber, takes up a position it will never leave, and stares.  And then it appears to speak, and also to answer!  What dreaded secret thing does it know?  And why has it come?
From the sleeve-notes:
"Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most original writers to have contributed to Literary Horror.  His excellence was partly due to his being also considerable psychologist, philosopher, and 'musician'.  In the works featured here are extraordinary understanding of the human condition, scholarly consideration of the nature of life, and outstanding mastery of the use of language as music.  The Tell-Tale Heart tells of power, manipulation, and guilt; Berenice observes the creeping effects of fixation and obsession; and The Raven so trembles with its own poetically-expressed sound-world that only the slightest and briefest musical accompaniment has been felt appropriate.  Poe’s application of the psychological, the philosophical, and intensely musical poeticism rendered each of these tales so very much darker and more satisfying than would otherwise have been achieved."
